Using Chrome Live Captions for Translation

Google Chrome’s Live Caption feature can automatically generate captions for any audio playing in the Chrome browser.

Written by VCE Support

These captions can also be translated, which makes it useful for video calls, videos, podcasts, live streams, and other audio content.

Important: All audio and captions are processed locally on your device. They are not stored and do not leave your computer.

Turn Live Caption On or Off (Windows or Mac)

  1. Open Google Chrome on your computer.

  2. In the top right corner, click More (three dots).

  3. Click Settings.

  4. Go to Accessibility.

  5. Turn Live Caption On or Off.

Once enabled, captions will automatically appear whenever audio plays in Chrome.

Change Caption Language / Translation Language

If you want captions in a language other than English:

  1. Open Chrome Settings.

  2. Go to Accessibility.

  3. Next to Manage languages, click Add languages.

  4. Chrome will automatically download the language pack.

  5. Next to Preferred caption language, click the Down arrow.

  6. Select your preferred language.

Chrome will now generate captions in that language when available.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use headphones for clearer audio recognition.

  • Speak clearly and at a moderate speed.

  • Make sure audio is played through Chrome, not another app.

  • Keep the captions window visible.

  • Test Live Caption before important VCE sessions.
