This guide provides clinicians with the necessary steps to effectively use the VCE™ Smart Glass during a session, ensuring a smooth and productive experience.

Requirements

You have:

Step-by-step guide for use during sessions

Step 1: Determine your dominant eye

To ensure optimal viewing, determine your dominant eye with a simple test. This will help you place the Smart Glass module on the correct side of the frame.

  1. Find a distant object to focus on, such as a clock or picture on the wall.

  2. Form a small triangle with your hands by overlapping your thumbs and forefingers.

  3. Focus on the object within the triangle with both eyes open.

  4. Close one eye to see if the object remains centred. Repeat with the other eye to determine which eye is dominant.

Step 2: Mount the Smart Glass

Tip: If the external battery is too heavy when mounted on your Smart Glass' frame, use the longer USB cable and place the battery in your pocket.

  1. Slide the Smart Glass module onto the frame on the side of your dominant eye.

  2. Connect the module to the battery using the USB cable.

  3. Attach the battery to the frame or keep it in your pocket.

  4. Turn on the battery to power the Smart Glass. The Smart Glass will startup in scanning mode.

Step 3: Test the VCE™ Smart Glass in the device test centre

Before starting a session, it's crucial to test your Smart Glass in the device test centre to ensure they function properly. Refer to the Test and manage devices (pre-session) guide for detailed instructions.

Step 4: Adjust the Smart Glass module

The Smart Glass module features several hinge and swivel points that allow you to adjust it for the best fit. To align the Smart Glass with your line of sight, take a moment to explore all the possible movements. This will help you find the most comfortable position.

Note: Some clinicians prefer to position the Smart Glass outside their direct line of sight. This is a valid option. If you find it too obstructive, you can tilt the module upwards and angle the camera downwards. However, this will prevent you from viewing the Smart Glass screen, and the device will function purely as a first-person camera. In the device test centre, you can check the camera feed to ensure it is correctly pointed forward.

Step 5: Connect the VCE™ Smart Glass during a session

  1. Power on the Smart Glass:
Press the power button on the battery. The Smart Glass will startup in scanning mode and is ready to scan the session QR code.

  2. Start session and generate the QR code:
After ending the Introduction phase, click on 'Add Smart Glass'. Or, during the Consultation phase, click on the white 'Connect Smart Glass' icon at the bottom of the browser's window.

  3. Scan the session QR code:
Use the Smart Glass to scan the session QR code. If successful, you should see an image in your browser window, indicating the Smart Glass is ready for the session.

Step 6: The Smart Glass 'Pause' Function

  • Added Value: Pause the stream during routine tasks or breaks to focus on moments that provide meaningful learning for students.

  • Save Battery: Use the pause function to conserve battery life when the stream is not needed.

Using the Power Button

Pausing the Video Stream

  1. Locate the round power button on the side of your smart glasses.

  2. Press the button once to pause the video stream.

    • You will notice the stream pause immediately, confirming the action.

Restarting the Video Stream

  1. Once the stream is paused, press the round button once again.

    • The stream will restart, and you can resume your session seamlessly.

Step 7: Instructions after use

Tip: Always wipe devices between users to maintain hygiene.

  1. Clean Smart Glass with medical disinfectant wipes:
Gently wipe down all surfaces of the Smart Glass with disinfectant wipes to remove any bacteria or viruses.

Warning: Avoid submerging the devices in liquid cleaning solutions.

  2. Charge the batteries:
After each use, recharge the batteries to ensure that they are ready for the next session.

  3. Make sure Smart Glass is shut off:
Ensure the Smart Glass is powered off completely before storing them to preserve battery life and avoid accidental connections.

  4. Store properly:
Store the Smart Glass in a dedicated drawer or box where all the device elements, like cables, are kept together. This will prevent other people from accidentally taking or misplacing them.

Troubleshooting

For any issues that arise during the use of the Smart Glass, refer to the relevant troubleshooting sections below for more detailed guidance.

VCE™ Smart Glass is not connecting

The Smart Glass fails to connect to the VCE web app or Wi-Fi.

  • Already connected in another session: Check if the Smart Glass is connected to a different session. If so, disconnect them from that session.

  • Connection timeout: Try disconnecting the Smart Glass and reconnecting it. If the problem persists, restart both the Smart Glass and the Wi-Fi router.

  • Incorrect Wi-Fi password: Ensure the correct Wi-Fi credentials were entered when generating the QR code.

VCE™ Smart Glass disconnects during a session

The Smart Glass loses connection during an ongoing session.

  • Weak Wi-Fi signal: Move closer to the Wi-Fi router to ensure a stronger signal. Check the Wi-Fi speed to ensure it meets the required minimum (20 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload).

  • Network interference: Other devices on the network may be causing interference. Try reducing the number of connected devices or switching to a less congested Wi-Fi channel.

  • Power issues: Ensure that the external battery is fully charged and securely connected to the Smart Glass.

VCE™ Smart Glass stream is frozen

The video feed from the Smart Glass freezes during a session.

  • Temporary glitch: Wait for one minute to see if the connection resets automatically. If it does not, restart the Smart Glass.

  • Overheating: The Smart Glass may be overheating, especially if used for an extended period. Allow the device to cool down before restarting the session.

  • Software lag: Check if there are any available software updates for the Smart Glass. Installing the latest updates can resolve lagging or freezing issues.

VCE™ Smart Glass is unresponsive

The Smart Glass does not respond to commands or touch inputs.

  • Device crash: Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force a reboot. This should resolve most unresponsiveness issues.

  • Touchpad calibration: If the touchpad is not responsive, recalibrate it through the settings menu on the Smart Glass.

Wi-Fi connection issues

The Smart Glass is connected to Wi-Fi, but cannot access the internet.

  • Complete network configuration: ensure you have completed and passed the internet and platform connectivity tests.

  • MAC address filtering: Your network may require the MAC address of the Smart Glass to be whitelisted. See: Network configuration and testing.

  • Network certificate requirement: Some networks require a security certificate for internet access. Obtain and install the necessary certificate on the Smart Glass. See: Network configuration and testing.

  • Router restrictions: Check if the router has any restrictions or parental controls that may block internet access for new devices. See: Network configuration and testing.
