This guide is designed for those who will be attending a VCE™ session as an observer. As an observer, your role is to watch the session without actively participating in the audio or video components. However, you can still engage by asking questions through the chat feature. For a more detailed understanding of how to participate in VCE™ sessions, you may want to refer to the Participate in sessions (as a participant) guide for additional context and preparation tips.

Preparation for the session

  • Review the session details
Before the session, make sure you understand the objectives and have reviewed any pre-learning materials provided. This will help you follow more effectively during the session.

  • Check your equipment
While you won’t be streaming your video or participating via audio, you still need a stable internet connection and a working computer. Ensure that your setup meets the necessary requirements.

Tip: For detailed specifications, refer to the 'for students' sections in the hardware and connection requirements guide, to ensure your setup is ready.

  • Prepare your environment
Choose a quiet, distraction-free space to observe the session. Although you won’t be on camera, maintaining focus is important for getting the most out of the experience.

  • Final checks
Shortly before the session, log in to the platform, ensure your internet connection is stable, and have any necessary materials ready.

Accessing your session

  • Select the session
On your dashboard, select the session you wish to observe. This will take you directly into the session.

  • Accepting a session invitation
If you receive an invitation to a session, accept it either from your dashboard or via the invitation email to join the session.

Observing the session

Introduction phase

This phase allows you to connect with the session and understand the structure. Although you won't be actively participating, use this time to get familiar with the platform and the session flow.

Consultation phase

During the live consultation, observe the interaction between the clinician and the patient. As an observer, your role is to watch and learn.

  • You can ask questions using the chat function, but remember, you won’t be able to use audio or video.

  • Use the chat feature to engage with other students or ask questions that the clinician or facilitator can answer when appropriate.

  • If there's a facilitator present, they may assist in managing chat interactions and ensure your questions are addressed.

Debrief phase

The debrief phase offers a chance to reflect on what you observed during the session. This is your opportunity to ask any final questions through the chat and to review key takeaways with other participants.

Tips for optimal learning experience

  • Engagement
Even as an observer, stay engaged throughout the session by actively watching and using the chat to ask questions.

  • Professionalism
Although you won’t be on camera, maintain a professional attitude throughout the session.

  • Feedback
Use the debrief phase to ask any lingering questions and solidify your understanding of the session content.
