The Speech Translator Chrome extension enhances accessibility by providing real-time transcription and translation, making it easier for multilingual participants and those with hearing impairments to engage in virtual clinical sessions.

Requirements

To use a Chrome extension for live transcription and translation, you need:

  • A computer with Google Chrome installed.

  • Audio playback or microphone access for the desired audio source.

  • Stable internet connection.

  • Permissions granted for browser audio capture.

Step-by-step guide to install and use the Chrome extension

Step 1: Install the Chrome extension

  1. Open Google Chrome and navigate to the Speech Translator Chrome Web Store page.

  2. Click on Add to Chrome, then confirm by selecting Add extension.

  3. Once installed, the extension icon will appear on the top-right corner of your Chrome browser.

Step 2: Configure the extension

  1. Click on the Speech Translator icon in the Chrome toolbar to open its settings.

  2. Grant microphone or system playback permissions as prompted.

  3. Choose your preferred translation service (e.g., Google Translate or Microsoft Translate).

  4. Customize appearance options, such as font size, background opacity, or overlay positioning, for ease of reading.

Step 3: Bookmark the extension

To quickly access the extension during sessions:

  1. Right-click on the Speech Translator icon and select Pin to Toolbar.

  2. This will ensure that the extension remains visible and ready for use.

Step 4: Set languages

  1. Open the extension settings and navigate to the Language Tab.

  2. Select the input language (language being spoken) and the target language (language for translation).

  3. Confirm the settings to save your preferences.

Step 5: Use the extension during sessions

  1. Begin a session and ensure the audio source is accessible (e.g., from the microphone or system playback).

  2. Open the extension and activate Streaming Mode to enable live transcription and translation.

  3. Adjust the overlay or window placement as needed to ensure it does not obstruct other visuals.

Tips
For improved performance, use the extension with minimal background noise.
Test the transcription and translation quality before the session begins.
Consider using headphones with a microphone to enhance audio clarity.

Troubleshooting

If the extension does not work as expected:

  • Ensure that Chrome is up-to-date.

  • Check audio permissions under Chrome settings (Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Microphone).

  • Restart Chrome and try again.
