In-Session Facilitation Guide

Your role during a VCE session is to actively guide learning, not just observe the session.

Align with the Clinician Before the Session

During the íntroduction mode of the platform, take a few minutes to align with the clinician on how best to facilitate the session. This is critical for a smooth and effective session.

Agree on Learning Outcomes

  • Confirm what learners should focus on

  • Clarify key moments or decisions to highlight

  • Ensure you and the clinician are aligned on the educational goals

Agree on How Learners Will Engage

  • Should learners ask questions directly, or via the facilitator?

  • When is it appropriate to interrupt or ask questions?

  • Are there moments where the clinician prefers no interruption?

  • Can students ask questions directly to the patient?

Why This Matters

Clear alignment ensures:

  • A smoother session flow

  • Better timing of questions and interaction

  • A more confident facilitator and clinician

  • A higher-quality learning experience for students

The clearer it is how learners can engage — and what the clinician expects — the smoother and more effective the session will be.

Your Role During the Session

As a facilitator, you should:

  • Encourage participation from all learners

  • Support interaction with the clinician

Encouraging Participation

Keep learners actively involved by:

  • Asking open questions

  • Inviting different perspectives

  • Bringing quieter learners into the discussion

Examples of Questions

  • “What would you do next?”

  • “Do you agree with that decision?”

  • “What are the risks here?”

  • “What would you be thinking at this point?”

Interaction with the Clinician

Option 1 — Relay Questions

  • Collect questions from learners

  • Share them with the clinician at appropriate moments

Option 2 — Direct Interaction (Preferred)

  • Encourage learners to speak directly

  • Enable real-time discussion

Best practice: Move from facilitator-led questions to learner-led interaction

After the Session (Immediate Reflection)

Lead a short discussion using:

  • One thing done well

  • One decision to question

  • One thing to do differently

Then:

  • Link back to learning objectives

  • Reinforce key takeaways

Best Practice

  • Let learners think before you explain

  • Focus on clinical reasoning, not just actions

  • Encourage discussion, not passive viewing

Quick Checklist

During the session:

✔ Learners are engaged
✔ Questions are being asked
✔ Interaction is happening
✔ Key moments are highlighted
✔ Reflection is planned
