VCE™ Firewall Requirements for IT Teams

This page provides the firewall requirements for organisations using the VCE™ platform for live clinical education.

Written by VCE Support

Please ensure the following domains, IP addresses, protocols and ports are permitted through your firewall.

Please see 'Network configuration and testing' guide for more detailed information.

Network requirements

VCE™ is a browser-based application using WebRTC for real-time audio and video.

The network should:

  • Permit HTTPS traffic over TCP 443

  • Permit WebSocket connections

  • Permit WebRTC media traffic

  • Permit outbound UDP traffic on the ports listed above

  • Avoid SSL/TLS inspection or content filtering that interferes with WebRTC traffic to the listed VCE™ services

A dedicated internet connection is not required.

Sufficient upload bandwidth is required because the clinical site may transmit multiple simultaneous video feeds.

Testing

After applying the network configuration, please test from:

  1. The computer that will be used for the VCE™ session

  2. The network or Wi-Fi connection that will be used during the session

  3. Chrome or Microsoft Edge

Open VCE™ and run the connection check.

A successful test should confirm that the application can establish the connections required for real-time video and audio.

We recommend completing this test before the first scheduled VCE™ session.

Security information

The following information may be useful for security or information governance review:

  • Web application traffic uses TLS 1.2 or higher

  • Real-time media is encrypted in transit using DTLS-SRTP

  • Access is authenticated and controlled through role-based permissions

  • Only authorised participants can access scheduled sessions

  • Live sessions are not recorded by default

Troubleshooting

If VCE™ is accessible but live audio or video does not connect, please check:

  • UDP traffic is permitted to the listed media services

  • WebRTC traffic is not being blocked

  • WebSocket connections are permitted

  • SSL/TLS inspection is not interfering with the connection

  • The test is being performed from the same network that will be used during the live session

If VCE™ works when the device is connected to another network, such as a mobile hotspot, but not on the organisational network, this is a strong indication that the local network configuration or security policy is preventing the required traffic.

If you require assistance validating the configuration, please contact VCE™ Support ([email protected]).
