Using the Examination Camera

How to set up and use the Examination Camera on VCE™

Written by VCE Support

This guide explains how to connect, test and use the Examination Camera during a VCE™ session (Firefly DE608). The Examination Camera connects to the platform in the same way as the otoscope and dermatoscope, allowing clinicians to share detailed close-up clinical examinations with students in real time.

Requirements

Before using the Examination Camera during a session, ensure you have completed the initial setup and that the device is connected to your computer.

You will need:

  • Examination Camera

  • Computer with the VCE™ web app open

  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (latest version recommended)

Step-by-step guide for use during sessions

Step 1: Connect the device

Connect the Examination Camera directly to a USB port on your computer.

Note: Avoid connecting through USB hubs where possible.

The device powers on automatically. Confirm the LED illumination turns on.

Step 2: Launch VCE™ and test the device

Open VCE™ using Google Chrome.

Navigate to Setup & Devices.

Confirm the Examination Camera is recognised.

Select the device and check:

  • Live image

  • Focus

  • Illumination

  • Overall image quality

Step 3: Using the device during a session

Join your VCE™ session.

Ensure the Examination Camera is selected as the active examination device.

If multiple devices are connected, switch between them using the device selector.

Encourage students to ask questions or request alternative views throughout the examination.

Using the Examination Camera

The Examination Camera is designed for detailed close-up examinations, including the skin, mouth, throat, eyes, wounds and other external anatomy.

Position the camera approximately 2–10 cm from the area being examined.

Rotate the focus ring until the image is sharp.

Use the brightness control to increase or decrease the LED illumination depending on the examination area.

If reflections from moist or shiny surfaces reduce image quality, rotate the polariser ring on the front of the camera to minimise glare.

For the clearest image:

  • Hold the camera steady.

  • Move the camera before making large focus adjustments.

  • Allow students time to inspect the image before changing position.

  • Clean the lens if image quality decreases.

After the session

Disconnect the device.

Return it safely to the VCE™ device case.

Cleaning

After each patient:

  • Wipe the device using approved medical disinfectant wipes.

  • Clean the camera lens with a soft, lint-free cloth if required.

Do not immerse the device in liquids.
